Peach Dessert Contest

This year’s Wyoming Peach Festival Peach Dessert Contest was a success as usual. First place winner, Darlene Zimmerman entered her Hometown Gems (cream filled peach shaped cookies).  Peach Pie came in second place, entered by Patty Salaway.  Third place was shared by Kathy Moore and Mari Bratcher who entered with their Peach Pretzel Salad.

Wyoming Peach Festival Parade

A parade started out the 2009 Wyoming Peach Festival festivities on Saturday, August 1.  The parade traveled west on Camden Wyoming Avenue from the Fifer Middle School and traveled across  the railroad tracks, turning right on Railroad Avenue and ending at Third Street.  For the first time judging was done on the fire companies who participated in the parade.  This year first place went to the Dover Air Force Base Fire Company, and the Hartly Fire Company took second place.  A great job was done by our local fire companies and many others who participated in this annual parade.

Annual Fall Yard Sale

The Annual Fall Yard Sale has been scheduled for Saturday, September 19th.  This gives you plenty of time to clean out your attics, garages & basements to offer all your treasures at great prices.  The yard sale will be posted in the Dover Post and Delaware State News and held rain or shine from 7:00 am until ?.

Message from Chief Manuszak

The Wyoming Police Department hopes that everyone is enjoying their summer. The topic the police department would like to address this month is the issue of false alarms. These alarms are either police, medical, or fire related. Once the alarm is activated whether it is from a business or a residence, it is the responsibility of the police, fire department, or emergency medical services to respond to handle the emergency. The Town of Wyoming has an ordinance that addresses 'false alarms.’ The ordinance is written that after a certain amount of false alarms at a certain location, the business owner or the resident can be issued a civil fine by the town. This ordinance has not been enforced to my knowledge at this time. False alarms are a waste of your public safety resources when the agencies involved need to respond each time an alarm is activated, only to find out that it is not a valid alarm. Please do all of your public safety agencies a big favor and have your alarms checked periodically by your alarm company. The preventive maintenance will save your public safety resources for the true emergencies. Thank you all in advance for your cooperation and assistance in helping the Wyoming Police Department handle this matter. As always my door is open to talk with anyone that has any questions, comments, or issues. Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Do You Know Your Watershed Address?

If you are reading this, then you live in the St. Jones Watershed! A watershed is a particular area of land where the water that drains off the land (and the water that is below the ground) flows into the same place.  The water in our local area flows into the St. Jones River (hence the name, St. Jones Watershed). The water is carried by small streams, trenches and tributaries that all lead to the St. Jones River. See the map to check where you are in the St. Jones Watershed!
Remember: what you do in and around your community affects others that live in our watershed!  And for those people who like to think big, the St. Jones Watershed is just one watershed in a larger, complex system of other watersheds that all drain into the Delaware River and Bay, called the Delaware River Basin.

Funded by the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control Division of Soil and Water Conservation, Kate O’Brien is the Watershed Coordinator for the St. Jones Watershed.  Water pollution affects everyone. Look for future items that will discuss local water issues and simple ways that you can make a difference in your community!  To contact Kate, please call 302-739-9939 or email her at kate.o’brien@state.de.us.

Mayor’s Notes

Hello fellow citizens,

I hope everyone was able to participate in this year’s Peach Festival. The parade was awesome; the Festival was great. I do not think you can get a better peach smoothie at any other festival. A big thank you and congratulations go to the Peach Festival Committee on a job well done for 20 years now.

I would like to encourage everyone to come to a town meeting or workshop at least one time a year. Currently we have a Council meeting, a Council workshop, a Planning and Zoning meeting and a Charter/Ordinance Committee meeting once a month, each on various days and times.  It is important to me to get concerns, ideas and compliments from our town’s residents. If you are interested in being more involved in our town’s government and cannot make a meeting, please contact me via cell or email. I would like to create the Exploratory Annexation and Public Works Building Committees in the next month or so, but I need some interested residents to do so. I hope everyone is enjoying their summer and look forward to a well attended council meeting in September.
