Adopt-A-Family
With the kind donations from a few residents and businesses in Wyoming the Town was able to give a nice Christmas to a family who would not have had much of one if not for the Town of Wyoming. The family was adopted through help from the W. B. Simpson Elementary School. It was a family with four children ranging in age from 11 through 16. Due to the forecast of the upcoming snow storm that came through on Saturday, December 19th, Mayor Marasco allowed Pam and Nicole to close the office on Friday, the 18th, and shop for the family. All the gifts were wrapped on Monday, the 21st and the parents picked them up that afternoon. They seemed so pleased that their children would have a Christmas this year after all. Dad is out of work due to a serious injury to his hand. They are hoping the New Year will have things looking up for them. Thanks go out to those of you who helped the Town of Wyoming with this wonderful project.
C W Sewer & Water
Congratulations to Mr. Mike McFann, Mr. Mike Quinn, & Mr. Lester Stillson for being appointed as the 2010 Wyoming representatives on the Camden Wyoming Sewer & Water Authority at the December 7th Council Meeting. Mr. Stillson will be retiring and doing some traveling in early spring; therefore, he will be unable to complete his 1 year term. The Town is looking for someone who would be interested in filling his seat. The Sewer & Water Authority meets on the second Tuesday of each month at the CWSW Authority Building on West Street in Camden. If interested, please send a letter of interest to Wyoming Town Hall, 1 N. Railroad Avenue, Wyoming, DE 19934.

Anyone interested in running for one of these seats must send in a signed letter of interest along with a completed criminal background check no later than Friday, January 29th, 2010, at 4:30 p.m. Letters must be addressed to Town of Wyoming, 1 N. Railroad Avenue, Wyoming, DE 19934. Fingerprints for the criminal background checks may be done at the State Bureau of Investigation which is located on the north end of the Blue Hen Corporate Center behind the old J. C. Penney store. All candidates will be reimbursed for the cost of the background check after submitting the letter of interest and the completed background check as well as a receipt for payment to the finance clerk. To be eligible to run for Town Council, you must be at least 21 years of age, a citizen of the State of Delaware, and a bona fide domiciliary of the Town for at least one year prior to the election. It usually takes approximately two weeks to get the results back on the background check so please do not wait until the last minute to have it done. If you have any questions, please call Town Hall, 697-2966, and speak to Pam or Nicole.
2010 Census
The U.S.Government is gearing up for the 2010 Census. The Town has been asked to donate space for a Questionnaire Assistance Center; therefore, we agreed to have the Annex open between the dates of March 19th and April 19th, 2010. There will be some morning, afternoon, and evening hours to accommodate those who need assistance filling out the forms. There will be a more specific time schedule in future issues of this newsletter. The Census is important to everyone and you should take it very seriously. A lot of the federal funding for roads, schools, hospitals, etc. is based on the data that is collected during the Census. You should be receiving your forms in the mail during the month of March; however, if you do not get a form, there will be forms available at the Questionnaire Assistance Center. Keep watch in future newsletters for more information.
Consider a Low Salt Diet
When the snow and ice melt after a winter storm, the water flow will take with it anything that it collects on the ground and will wash it down storm drains. This means that melting ice will carry the deicer materials that we use to clear our driveways and walkways down storm drains and into local waterways. The chlorides that make up the deicers can harm aquatic wildlife, affect nearby plant growth in your yard, and can remain trapped in your soils. Luckily there are alternatives to conventional rock salt deicers that are easy to purchase and will also help in keeping our pathways safe! Here are some helpful tips that will keep your pavements clear and local streams cleaner!
- Removing freshly fallen snow before it has a chance to freeze and harden into ice is one of the more effective ways of keeping your pavements clear. Plus, if you do need to use deicers, they will work better when there is a thin layer of snow.
- If you are using traditional rock salt, the recommended application is a handful for one square yard. Using more salt than this will not make the ice melt faster; it will only end up costing you more money and the salt will be washed away by the storm water!
- Mixing sand in with the deicer will also aid in melting the snow and ice and also allow you to cut back on the amount of rock salt that is being used. Sand or regular brand kitty litter will also add traction to the surface as well. But remember, if there is left over sand and kitty litter on your walkway or driveway, then use a broom to clean it up. Using a hose to wash the sand and kitty litter away will push the material into nearby storm drains, and create more ice once that water freezes, so put that broom to work!

December Snow Storm
A huge “THANKS” goes out to maintenance man Lew Denham for his hard work and long hours clearing the Town’s roads during and after the December 19th snow storm. Thanks also to the residents for their patience during this trying time. With so much snow to move and so few places to move it to as well as having the salt spreader inoperable due to it being frozen up, Lew had a monumental job on his hands; however, Wyoming’s streets were better than Camden’s and Dover’s. GO LEW!!!
The Town of Wyoming truly needs a storage garage large enough to house the Town’s pick-up for times such as these to prevent the freeze-up of the salt spreader. Does anyone have space we can borrow in the meantime?
Park Flag
The next time you go down West Third Street be sure to take a look at our new flag at the Wyoming Park. Thanks to Councilman Bill Spruill for fabricating and installing the flag pole, and thanks to Mr. L. Gene McFann for installing the light to keep the flag illuminated at night. If you look closely, the new illuminated flag can be seen from New Burton Road.
Message from Chief Manuszak
The Wyoming Police Department is pleased to announce it's partnership with the Nixel Company. This company provides a service to the town that will allow the police department to send messages out to our residents during times of emergencies or if important but non-emergency messages need to be sent out. I am hoping that we will have this program in full service by the beginning of February, 2010. As I obtain more specific information about this new program, I will be sure to get the information out to all of you using the town newsletter. If any of you have any questions about this program or if there is any other matter the police department can be of service to you with, please feel free to call or stop by. Happy New Year!

Message from the Mayor
Happy new year everyone!
We ended 2009 with a huge snow event. Hopefully we will not be starting 2010 with one. A special thanks goes out to Lew, our maintenance man, who gave up his vacation to remove snow from our streets and walks. His dedication to our town and his strong work ethic enabled all of our streets to remain open throughout the snow event. A thank you also to those residents that helped clear their areas of town with their own equipment. It was good to see our community work together to get through the snow event.
Our town still needs volunteers. I would really like to see the Street and Annexation committees formed over the next two months. To do this we need volunteers to come forward. Please give some thought about giving back to your community and share your ideas and concerns an hour a month or so. This will not only help our community be a better place, but will give you an opportunity to meet new people as well.
We all try hard, but we are not perfect. Please, when we do not live up to expectations, call me. We cannot improve unless we know our faults.
